Spot the one incorrect sentence in each of 10 questions on agreement, tenses and prepositions, then read the corrections.

This English grammar test checks whether you can spot a common grammar mistake. Each of the 10 questions shows four sentences, and only one of them is wrong. The mistakes cover subject and verb agreement, uncountable nouns, perfect tenses and prepositions. It is for intermediate learners (around B1) who want to check how accurate their English is.
How to take this test
- Read all four sentences before you choose.
- Find the one sentence with a grammar mistake. The other three are correct.
- Check the verb first, then the nouns and small words such as in, on, at and of.
- At the end, review your answers. Each explanation shows the corrected sentence.
What this test covers
- Subject and verb agreement: Sarah and Jack play, each child has, every girl thinks. Revise the rules in our lesson on singular and plural verbs.
- Uncountable and group nouns: advice has no plural form, and police always takes a plural verb.
- Perfect tenses: I have known him, she has been ill, it had already started. See the present perfect tense lesson and the past perfect tense lesson.
- Prepositions: consist of, good at, in December, arrive in, on many occasions.

Tip
Always find the subject first. Each, every and everyone take a singular verb (everyone thinks), but police and people take a plural verb (the police are here).
Frequently asked questions
Why is “The police is coming” wrong?
In English, police is a plural noun even though it does not end in -s. So we say “The police are coming” and “The police have arrived”.
Can I say “advices”?
No. Advice is uncountable, so it has no plural form. Say “some advice”, “a lot of advice” or “a piece of advice”.
What level is this grammar test?
