English lessons written to be read, not skimmed

Learn English for Life is a free reading site for people learning English as a second language. Each lesson explains one idea in plain English, shows it in real sentences and ends with practice that tells you why an answer is right.

Why we started

Many learners in Sri Lanka and around the world study English from long lists of rules. We wanted lessons that read like a good teacher talking: short paragraphs, clear examples and honest notes about the mistakes everyone makes.

Everything on the site is free to read. Advertising pays for hosting and new lessons, and we keep ads away from exercises so they never get in the way of learning.

How every lesson is made

  1. We start with the question learners actually ask.
  2. We explain the rule in one or two sentences, then show it in at least five examples.
  3. We add the common mistakes and a short practice quiz with explanations.
  4. We check facts against the Cambridge and Oxford learner dictionaries and the CEFR level descriptions.
  5. We update lessons when readers point out something unclear.
